My father, R A Horne (Jimmy) worked for Shell Mex and BP before the second world war. He was captured at Dunkirk and spent five years as a POW. When he was repatriated he spent all of the rest of his working life with Shell Mex. He passed away in 1976.
Dad had many hats with Shell Mex & BP whilst employed at the Hamble Terminal including: mechanic, teaching men to drive the tankers, delivering cars to other depots, (he always had his trade plates with him, and would either get the train back home or hitch a lift from other drivers by waving the trade plates) and in the office. Dad enjoyed working at Hamble and his colleagues would play jokes on him which he took in good humour. He always wore a tie and on one occasion when some 'top nobs' were due, his mates, put his tie in a vice and the only way he could get out of it was to cut his tie with scissors. He was a slight man and I'm sure no malice was intended. Dad was such a lovely, well liked person. |
