Paul Herd remembers his early days at Dingle Bank Installation.
After an interview in Manchester Regional Office with N Q Browne (Staff Supervisor) and H I Evans (Operations Manager) followed by an interview at Dingle Bank Installation with E P Lancashire (Installation Manager) I started as a trainee youth operative at Dingle Bank Installation on Tuesday the 8th of August 1961.
The Manager was Eric Lancashire, Asst Manager was George Williams, Transport Manager was Eric Stalford, the Engineering Manager was Len Clutterbuck and the Laboratory Manager was Sid Barford.
It was a great place to work and in 1962 we held a car rally and then decided to form our own Motor Club. After enquiries with the BP Automobile Club which existed, we felt we should form a Shell Mex and BP Club The Dingle Bank Motor Club was started and the car badge design included the new overall flashes which were being introduced. Several events were held. I have come across a short piece of standard 8 cine film covering one of the rallies. I recognise Derek Williams, Harry Vernon, Eric Stalford and Freddie Greenwood. (Scroll down to see the video – turn the sound on to enjoy the music!) I left Dingle in 1964 and moved to the Manchester office and the following year was transferred to Shell Mex House.
